Meteor Shower Calendar

The following are the dates for meteor showers for 2011.

January 3-4: Quadrantids – From Comet 2003 EH1. Features blue meteors. The frequency is 40/hour. They will originate around the constellation Bootes. Their speed is around 25.5 miles/sec.

April 21-22: Lyrids – From Comet C/Thatcher. The frequency is 20/hr. They will originate around the constellation of Lyra. Their speed is around 29.8 miles/sec.

May 5-6: Eta Aquarids – From Comet 1P/Halley. The frequency is 10/hr, around the constellation Aquaries.

June 14-16: Lyrids.  There won’t be much moon showing! The frequency is 10/hr.

July 28-29: Delta Aquarids. The frequency isĀ  20/hr. They will originate around the constellation Aquarius. Their speed is around 25.5 miles/sec.

July 29-30: Capricornids. The colors are yellow. The frequency is 15/hour. Their speed is around 15 miles/sec.

August 12-13: Perseids – From Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. There won’t be much of a moon–so it’ll be dark. This shower has about 60 meteors per hour.
The frequency is about 60/hr. They will originate around the constellation Perseus.

October 8-9: Draconids – From Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner. Almost moonless conditions. The frequency is about 10/hr.

October 21-22: Orionids – From Comet 1P/Halley. The colors are yellow and green. The frequency is 20/hr. Their speed is around 41.6 miles/s

November 17-18: Leonids – From Comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle. The frequency is 40/hr. They will originate around the constellation Leo.

December 13-14: Geminids – From Comet 3200 Phaethon. Best, high frequency shower of the year. There will be a half moon. The colors are yellow, white, a few blue, reds, and greens. The frequency is 60-100/hr. They will originate around the constellation Gemini.
